The whole notion of retirement has been radically changed. We used to think of retirement as the beginning of the end. Now we simply think of retirement as a new beginning. The retirement transition is actually the beginning of a new career/life stage called RENEWAL.
This is not your parents’ retirement! We are living longer healthier lives and many of us may be retired for 25-30 years! Leisure time is great but 20 years of it? Even the best of us are likely to get tired of playing all the time!
So what does the new retirement look like? Clearly it is different for everyone and each person knows what makes him or her happy. But there are certain factors that have been identified that point to a greater level of satisfaction in retirement. At Retire Your Way, LLC we work together to identify your strengths and areas to focus on to increase the odds of a happy third act!
The first step is an assessment of your retirement readiness. Once this is completed we will meet to discuss the results and determine your next steps. I offer a variety of individual and group coaching packages. I will work with you to find one that will fit your budget.
Please contact me for a complimentary consultation so you can get started on planning the best retirement you can dream of!

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
— Dr. Seuss
I recently came across something I wrote several years ago after I suffered a disappointment in a relationship. I think it is good advice and I believe it must have been my authentic self speaking to me! I am sharing it with you in the hopes that it will touch you as it did me.
Do not compare yourself to others
Value the friends you have and do not worry about those who exclude you from their circle. You are important to those who love you and who you love. Attend to these relationships, nurture them and they will grow and provide rewards to you, to the ones you love and to the world. The more you give the more you receive. You are an integral part of creation. Without you the universe is diminished.

I have found great inspiration over the years from Marianne Williamson. In her essay “What’s Age Got to do with it?” she talks about embracing the changes you go through as you age instead of resisting them. A very important factor for a successful retirement is your perception of age.
Richard P. Johnson, Ph.D. defines Perception of Age as: “The degree to which you see your own maturation process as a time of emotional and psychological vitality and vibrancy full of potential for dynamic and ongoing personal growth.”
How old would you be if you did not know how old you were?

One of the dictionary definitions of retirement is “withdrawal”. Sound’s pretty bleak to me, how about you? Or maybe you are feeling so worn out that a period of withdrawal sounds pretty good. And taking time to withdraw from the world for a brief time is often very necessary and healing. But a lifetime of it can get pretty old, no pun intended!
Many women are not ready to withdraw from the world. In fact most of the women I know that are nearing retirement tell me that this is the best time in their lives. They feel wiser, are in great health and feel more grounded than ever before. You may feel this way too. And yet there is a great deal of uncertainty about what retirement will look like. What will I do with my time is one of the most frequent questions I hear.
Living from your heart and following your passions can lead you to a better understanding of what you want your retirement life to look like. It may seem to you that you have been so busy working or raising a family and caring for others that you haven’t given any thought to who you are anymore. If this resonates with you then you probably need to take some time to find yourself again.
If you are looking for more in your life than a rocking chair on the porch when you retire, now is a good time to begin the process of preparing yourself for the retirement life you want. Start by asking yourself the following questions:
- What do you feel passionate about?
- What does living from your heart mean to you?
- What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Begin a journal with the answers to these questions and the thoughts and feelings they invoke in you. Taking some time for yourself now will pay big dividends to you in the future.
